I have no idea if this is real or otherwise, but it's certainly a little bit cool nonetheless.

Part of me hopes that's the side of George Lucas' outside toilet block.

If anyone has any further info on this I'd love to know where in the world this is! So far my only options are a long time ago, and far, far away..

Stanlee-liambrazier

Well, this was certainly a nice bit of post to receive (the fact it arrived along with a tax credit overpayment notice didn't overshadow it's smile-inducing powers).

Yes that is father Marvel himself; Stan Lee, scribbling nicities on some of my doodles after featuring some of my hero pieces on his blog. All thanks to the exceedingly generous Bob McGann who took a trip to see the great man recently and chose to take my work in tow.

A big thank you to (my friend) Mr Lee, and a collosal thank you to Bob.

Excelsior!

Comparison
This weekend gone several of my twitter followers either felt the urge to alert me, or did genuinely want to question if some new variations on my pop culture work had been released under an alias. The answer is of course no. The pieces they were referring to belong to James Reid (or theBlackeningCo online), a "Photoshop retoucher dabbling in illustration.." from New Zealand.

I believe their eyebrows went northward mainly due to their appearance on Society6 - the site where I debuted the Star Wars pieces, and were indeed some of the consistent top sellers in certain categories in that shop since early 2011.

If you do follow me on Twitter or Society6 you would have learnt that Lucasfilm removed my self-titled 'Far, Far Away' collection last month from said shop for reasons unknown. This month Reid joined Society6 and uploaded his work there. Indeed, all the pieces appear to have been created recently, and evidently with a Daulanay script in Illustrator (something I learned the existance of in late 2011 due to such articles linking back to my site in the inquisitive 'is this how Liam Brazier does it?' sort of way).

I do not hold copyright on any pop culture characters, and I would suspect neither does Mr Reid. I assume the mere existance of the Movie and Tv section upon Society6 would dictate such content is self-explanatory and allowed (just a passing glance displays more than a penchant for Mr Lucas' films or those pulled from the pages of Marvel and Dc) it is after all drawn for fans, by fans.

As a quick aside; I did even go to the trouble of never using specific titles or logos or such like in my images, not purely for the rights issues but moreso that the work is my experimentation of a method and I prefer that to be the focus. I have actually had to explain to more than one that the 'Guard' illustration is not a woman in a burka..

I certainly cannot claim that scribbling characters from my favoured media is an original concept and would never dare. What I hoped was that I could bring something, in some small part, different in approach, in style, that was new. James Reid has every right to create work however he sees fit - or if accusations are closer to the truth; ape others like mine or to my eyes some heavily watered down Olly Moss background elements from his own superb Star Wars pieces. I think what my twitter followers and those that contacted me are insinuating rather is whether it is morally right.

Illustrators are a very small group, and it certainly feels as if we are huddled, backs to the wall staring out at blank faces much of the time. As a consequence illustrators tend to a) be protective of their style - it is their livelihoods and while it can be said that there are no new ideas in the world, there are new approaches and those become as identifiable as their names, and b) protective of other illustrators Intellectual Property, as it is.

In conclusion, I thank Mr Reid for emailing me to inform that he had never seen my work before this past weekend. I'll link to his webpage in good faith and also to mine below, so, as always in this industry that is judged solely on personal taste, you can make your own judgements.

Do comment below if you have any opinions on anything I've touched on above.

The lovely types at Jack Morton needed some super talented illustration scribbler to help launch the new Galaxy Note phone/tablet for Samsung's European launch of their new Ice Cream Sandwich whizzy bits and pieces. Thankfully I guess said scribbler was busy because they got me in instead.

In the centre of Battersea Power Station they'd erected what you glimpse in the video above (live streamed across the globe) and showed my work and hands on one of the largest temporary screens in Europe. The superhero doodle you see me doing on stage is completed in real time too, and it only took me about twenty goes to get it that fast..

Thanks to everyone involded for being so accommodating and putting up with me amid the chaos of organising such a huge event.

And so I act now apparently, or more accurately; 'fail to read words written down in front of me with any sort of skill'. Still, when very good and wisened friend, nay director Geoff asked me politely if I'd like to partake in his short film endeavour I had two thoughts - the latter; "Of course! Would be an honour and a pleasure!" and the other; "Exactly how many people said no to this already??"

Tiring though it was running about being chased by shrubbery around London town (ten points if you spot the Shining homage) and at points a) shutting down the VIctoria tube line, and b) exposing an underground drug syndicate, it was certainly a lot of fun for the two days.

Filmed in just a weekend, produced for the 2 Days Later horror film challenge, and screened at the festival in Margate over the Halloween weekend 2011, 'Botanophabia' (a real phobia - who kenw?) is a tour de force of tounge meeting inner cheek, as it were, and how to populate Youtube with a less than zero budget.

Please feel free to laugh both with and at it - Geoff's blood, sweat, and ..fertiliser went into making it with myself and B, Sophie, Quita, Carl, Simon and Andrea, and it really was an honour and pleasure to be involved/smacked in the face with a tree branch.

Enjoy!

Tue, 11 Oct 2011 12:43:00 -0700 Geométricos http://liambrazier.posterous.com/geometricos http://liambrazier.posterous.com/geometricos
Media_httpwwwyorokobu_wmggn

The lovely people from Yorokobu asked me to jabber some stupid answers to some infinetly more intelligent questions for their site. The subsequent interview was then translated into Spanish so very probably is edited to make me seem a great deal more erudite than I actually am.

That said here's the interview in boring ol'English if you're interested;

Your style is defined but hard to define. How would you define it?

I have tended to avoid classifying it beyond 'illustration' - others have tried, labelling it 'polygonal' or 'geometric', truth be told; I don't know what it is other than a comfortable way for me to work.

If I'm to (over)analyse it I say it probably stemmed from doodling Biro pictures of Red Dwarf's Kryten as a nerdy youth. Ergo; it is Krytenist. Or something.

Where does your fixation with superheroes come from?

I suppose they play to the strong lines and sharp angled shapes they are created with. Also I'm an unashamed geek at heart.

People seem to like them which is fine by me - I'm still reeling from using the word 'ergo' in the last answer.

How do you create those geometric shapes?

The more recent 'geometric' style Actually harks back to a way of working I dabbled in back in university (at the end of the 90's). Then the straight lines were a by-product of individually cutting out each shape from coloured card with a scalpel and collaging them together with spray-mount to form the image.

Which is a better way of saying I pretty much ruined the carpet of my university house bedroom.

More recently the polygonal lasso tool in Photoshop has taken most of the brunt out of the graft of creating them. It is merely a process of building coloured shapes to define a form, and me telling people that red triangle is Spider-man and people believing it.

What else inspires your work?

I've stuck to the things that interest me - pop culture from my life time - from growing up in the 80's and the now retro symbolism that has taken on.

I love movies, comics, computer games, toys, and so forth. I'm pretty fascinated by these other man-made universes that exist parallel to our own (fictionally - not REALLY exist, I'm not a crazy) where imagery is all created from scratch and is made of ideas.

How long does it take you to create a piece like this (on average)?

It varies widly with the complexity. A good two or three days is usually sufficient but I chop and change as I go - they are only ever loosely planned.

In short; too long.

What are your working on at the moment?

I am very busy with the work that pays the bills but I am hoping things will settle to a point where I can juggle more personal illustration projects.

If I were a superhero then time is my kryptonite, alas.

Apart from illustration what other things do you do?

I animate when I can in After Effects for various things, I produce some animated work for the lovely folks at Epipheo Studios, and recently starred (read: shouted a lot) in a friend's 48 hour horror film due to premiere in Margate (UK) soon. I'll apologise to the general populous for my 'acting' in that now - no amount of inverted commas around that word will endow it with enough humbleness.

Is there anything else you would like to add about your work?

Prints and other items are for sale via the Shop link on my site. Take a look if you have some sort of condition where you can't stop yourself from buying cheap things online.

Thanks!

I have had this sultry slab of old school, jazz wrapped, glamour caressing my ear-holes for the last month or so, like a velvet cushion for the world beyond myself, after a friend confessed her undying adoration for her and I took notice, and subsequently joined the doe-eyed queue.

Lana Del Rey is so young and so talented that it makes me hate myself for not being a twenty-something jazz singing girl. I fear upon fear that by the time a physical document of Miss Del Rey oozes sensually into the world that it may become more a product of THE MACHINE, as it were, but here the track 'Video Games' ticks many a box for me.

Many people have asked how I create the angular, geometric style illustrations, and wrongly assume they are made in Illustrator using vectors (I have no doubt this would be a more efficient method it's just not my method).

Each shape is drawn, one at a time, with Photoshop's polygonal selection tool and filled with a colour (or in some pieces later stages - a gradient), until I am happy or have gone crazy.

All exceedingly last minute but the lovely people at Dissention Records very kindly asked if I'd throw some things in frames for a group exhibition at the Brick Lane Gallery for two weeks.

Do pop along to London and have a peek at the work on show if you can until the 14th of August, some great work by other artists doing a very good job at making mine look inferior I think, but I'll leave the opinions to your pretty heads.

As far as my work is concerned; the gallery will be taking orders for any of the work on display. Each ordered print will be a 12"x18" gallery-quality giclée print on 100% cotton rag archival paper, printed with archival inks, signed and numbered in an edition of 50, shipped in a tube, and their first numbered run. You just need to make sure you leave your postage address when you make your payment at the gallery!
